Visiting Vegas for Fun for the First Time
I went to Las Vegas last week with my wife, Kelly, for our “babymoon.” A babymoon is the mini vacation that you take before the baby arrives. It was nice to have a break from the kids, and have some one-on-one time with Kelly.
I’ve been to Las Vegas dozens of times for business, but this trip was actually the first time I’ve gone to Las Vegas for a vacation.
I’m just not a big fan of gambling and the entire Las Vegas party scene, but Kelly wanted to go to watch some shows. It’s something that we’d never done previously.
While we were there, we basically walked around during the day, went to see a Boyz II Men concert and Cirque De Soleil Ka.
Boyz II Men
I had a good time at the Boyz II Men concert. I can’t believe they’ve been around for over 20 years now! They lost one of their original members (Michael McCary left the group due to health reasons.), and it was interesting to learn about how the group was formed in high school and their journey together.
My view toward celebrity entertainers and athletes has changed over the years.
I used to admire them, but as I get older, it’s less about admiration and more about curiosity of how their lives have turned out.
Most of these celebrities have wasted all their money and are doing smaller shows just to survive and pay their bills. I don’t know the actual financial situation of Boyz II Men, but it was weird for me to see them perform in front of a few thousand people in Las Vegas when, during their prime, they would sell out entire stadiums of 25,000 or more.
I guess my perspective on things is totally different because, unlike entertainers, my career as an entrepreneur gets better each day, while other careers have short-term success then dip.
I’m always thinking long-term now and whether something can last. I hope Boyz II Men still love performing, and they don’t do it just for the money.
However, I wonder how someone handles the feeling of “I once was popular, but I’m not as popular now.” I’m sure celebrities have learned to live with that feeling, but fortunately I don’t plan to have to deal with that.
Cirque De Soleil Ka
It was my first time at a Cirque De Soleil performance, and I was bored for most of the show.
I was grateful that I went because I learned a few things, and I’ll always remember the memory of spending time with Kelly.
The performances and the theatre were amazing, but there was no real storyline; it dragged in some parts.
I’m not a big musical and arts person and would have rather spent the money to see a sporting event, but I did appreciate the experience.
Buffets in Las Vegas
We also had buffets for almost every meal in Vegas.
The two best buffets were the ones in The Bellagio (They had Chilean Sea Bass.) and the Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan.
I used to love buffets, but it has lost its appeal for me. I have totally cut down on my daily food consumption, and also gave up eating almost all meats (I only eat fish now.) so I don’t go crazy at them anymore. But it was still fun!
I don’t have cravings for meat, but my weakness is ice cream. It was hard to turn down the all-you-can-eat gelato!
Marketing Lessons from Nike
While in Vegas, I got myself a Nike Fuelband.
It is one of the new biometric devices that measure how active you are in your daily life. You wear it on your wrist and, based on your daily movement, it tracks your daily calories burned, the number of steps you’ve taken, and the amount of “Nikefuel” you have consumed.
The reason I am writing about this is because Nike did a great job with marketing and getting me to buy it!
In marketing, it takes an average of 21 exposures before someone commits to buy something.
That means you have to see an ad or product at least 21 times before you purchase it.
That is one of the reasons many people fail in business and network marketing. They quit too quickly.
They think the business doesn’t work when people don’t buy, or they don’t see their advertising produce any results. That is not true.
The business does work, but you must be consistent and stay the course.
Nike did a great job targeting me on Facebook, and for the last month or so, I see Nike’s Fuelband ad every time I am on the site.
Nike’s consistent presence got me curious, and I’ve actually compared the Nike Fuelband to other products made by Jawbone and Fitbit. I was attracted to Jawbone’s Up because it tracked sleep, and I even had the product in my hands at the Apple Store. However, in the end, Nike won out when I visited their store at the Forum Shops is Caesar’s Palace.
They had samples for me to try out, and helped me activate the device at the store so that I could wear the device during my time in Vegas. That is another lesson we can learn.
Once we sell something to someone, we must get that new customer to use our product ASAP before they get buyer’s remorse!
If I had to go home to set it up myself, I may have had second thoughts on purchasing it, especially since I had read reviews that the Fuelband was not that accurate. But since the Nike salesperson set it up for me, I got to enjoy the benefits of the product before I could “think more about it” and get hit with buyer’s remorse.
From start to finish, Nike did a great job in marketing and then winning me from the competition. I will write a future post on detailed marketing lessons from Nike.
As for the Fuelband device, I love it!
I don’t care how inaccurate the device really is. The important thing is that it DOES WORK because it makes being active competitive and fun.
I set a daily goal, and it forces me to do whatever it takes to hit it.
I hit 5,000 Nikefuel everyday.
Anyone dare to challenge me?
Have a great and active week!
Sincerely,
Simon Chan
