Solving Problems from a Different Perspective
The Good, The Bad, and Solving Problems
Recently, I had my Quarterly Meetings with my business partner, Scott McGee.
Every three months, we block out three to four consecutive days to go over the goals that we had set 90 days earlier.
During this intense week, we spend time going over:
– Our accomplishments,
– Our failures (The goals we failed to hit.), and
– Solving problems. (What were the things that caused us to miss our targets?)
In the past three months, we have done incredible things, such as launching and publishing two issues of MLM Training magazine, having a productive trip to Australia, and enhancing our customer retention program, etc.
These meetings have been tremendously effective because they hold each of us accountable, and more importantly, they allow us to diagnose our problems and what is preventing us from getting to the next level.
Solving Problems in Business
After more than ten years as an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that there are always new problems to deal with each day.
And the problem is NEVER the problem itself; it is how you view the problem.
So what does that mean?
That means that problems can be easily solved if you change your perspective on them.
All you need is a different mindset.
That is why the problem is never the problem; it’s just how you view the problem.
Stop to think about what I just wrote…
There are two immediate benefits to this problem solving technique.
1) It prevents you from blaming and complaining
Instead of saying something doesn’t work or it was someone else’s fault, adopting this approach forces you to look outside the situation for the solution.
Normally with problems, it really isn’t anyone’s “fault,” and even if it is, you will be wasting time and mental energy if you think you can change that person. The other person will never change, so in order for things to get better, you must change!
2) It provides hope because there is a solution
Changing people is hopeless. Moreover, if you ever hope to change someone, you will likely be let down by more people who never change than you will be excited by ones who actually do.
Realizing that the solution is simply changing the way you look at things can make you feel better and more optimistic, and you should feel better because it works!
Let me ask you this…
Have you ever had a coach, mentor, or someone else with a “fresh” set of eyes look at something and immediately give you an answer that you could not see?
Whether it was a puzzle, a question on an exam, or a problem, you could have spent hours thinking about it but couldn’t come up with anything?
But somehow a coach or mentor could figure it out easily.
Solving Problems from a Different Perspective
Here are examples of problems that can be solved by looking at things differently.
Connect the Nine Dots
One example that I love to use at my Leadership training workshops is this puzzle here.
Can you connect all nine dots with only four straight lines without lifting your pen or retracing?
Hint: If you know the answer, please post on my Facebook wall.
Once you “think outside the box” and learn to see the puzzle differently from the way you’ve been brought up, the answer is very obvious.
That’s why coaches and mentors are so important.
Why Coaches and Mentors Are Important
Coaches and mentors provide a fresh set of eyes.
It’s the reason why top performers like actors, musicians, and athletes all have coaches. People like Tom Cruise, Lionel Messier, and Tiger Woods have coaches to help them improve.
Note that the coaches do NOT need to have been great players. Sometimes they don’t even need to be former professionals.
They simply provide another set of eyes. They provide these top performers another perspective on their problem.
If Tiger Woods is performing badly all of a sudden, he may not be able to realize that he is swinging his club a little differently. He can’t see the subtle change because he is too close to the situation. His coach, however, is watching him from a third person’s perspective. He can immediately point out the difference to him so that he can make the adjustment.
The same applies to you.
You just need a fresh set of eyes.
You need a different perspective to look at things.
Remember, the problem is never the problem. It’s always the way you look at the problem.
Solving Problems for MLM Distributors
A great example is in the home business MLM profession.
A lot of new distributors may face rejection and have difficulty “closing” prospects and getting them to join.
A lot of novices with an employee mindset will say that the business does not work.
An experienced entrepreneur with a more experienced mindset would challenge himself or herself and instead ask, “What can I do to make it work?”
Some questions with which you can challenge yourself so that you get a different perspective are:
In what part of the presentation did I screw it up?
What words could I have used differently to make the prospects interested?
Could I have made the presentation more interesting?
Could I have indirectly marketed the business through social media so that people were interested in what I do instead of me having to convince people?
Was I being too salesy and turned people away?
Is there a way for me to find better prospects so that I need to do less convincing?
MLM definitely works because, if it didn’t, then no one would be successful. The fact is there are many people who earn full-time incomes in this profession. That proves that it works.
You just have to learn how to view things differently.
Applying This Technique to Solving Problems
Just like me, I know that you have problems.
Every living person has problems.
But instead of being frustrated and blaming others, say to yourself, “The problem is never the problem, and it’s simply the way I am looking at the problem.”
Do that… and let me know what you come up with and how you solve it. Tell me about the new perspective that opened up a solution for you.
Sincerely,
Simon Chan

Hi
Well about the nine dots…no problem…either one can join fr right to left and right or up and down and up. Well to have a mentor……you must be in a certain field or have certain responsibilities. Personally I am a retired person….when I was in the office……I followed the general worker aims and goals. Only thing I didn’t settle down……it shouldn’t be a big issue…..some girls understandably are wall flowers or left on the shelf. There are many unmarried ones!….isn’t it? The lessons of life one learns….. from good and bad experiences of day to day living. I don’t like learning from virtual managers or virtual relationships…..like e.g Mr Mano…..it will only set up one’s bld pressure…..soaring up! Life has a small compass and a little propeller to enjoy the good life without getting killed half-way.
