No One is Born a Leader but Everyone Can Be a Leader
The first rule is that everyone can be a leader.
Leaders are MADE and not born.
If you had met me back in my college days you would have never guessed I would have been a leader. Actually when I think back to my basketball playing days in college, I cringe at how stupid I was a player because of my “lack of leadership.” Leadership was the last thing that you would associate me with.
Leadership is Developed Over Time
The good thing is that Leadership is DEVELOPED over time and anyone can be a Leader.
But just like learning anything (like swimming, biking, playing the piano, etc.), the more study and practice leadership, the more you grow as a leader.
And how do you “practice leadership?”
You practice and be a Leader by being an example to others.
In other words, “you Lead by example” and you do that by doing the 5 Core Daily Production Activities everyday.
5 Core Daily Production Activities
1) Marketing: Building Your Contact List Everyday
Whether online or offline, you have to meet new people EVERY day
2) Prospecting
After you have a relationship with your contacts, make sure you prospect them
3) Followup
Followup with at least 5 old prospects everyday. I devote at least 2 hours of training on how to properly followup in Component 6 of THE S.O.W. SPONSORING SYSTEM
4) Self Development
Spend at least 30 – 60 minutes a day on improving your skills.
5) Talk to Your Team
Talk to your upline, downline or crossilne everyday. Success does not come to hermits on an island.
By doing these 5 Core Daily Production Activities everyday, you will become successful in network marketing very fast.
Just do it for 30 straight days and you will see miracles in your network marketing business.
More importantly, you will set an example of excellence to everyone in network marketing and you will become “That Leader.”
How to Create Leaders in your MLM Business
Creating a “Leadership Factory” and duplicating leaders is the ultimate goal of what network marketing is about.
But your downlines must WANT to be a Leader first.
They Must Want It
You must realize that because Leaders are Made and Not Born, your downlines must WANT to be a Leader first.
You can’t force them to be Leaders.
They must want it.
And they must want it MORE than you want it for them.
Does that make sense?
I am going to repeat that.
They MUST WANT to become Leaders more than you want it for them.
If you want it better than they do, then it will never work out. It will just result in frustrations because no matter how much you encourage nor nag them, they won’t do anything.
It’s like being a professional football (soccer) player. Someone can be born with the perfect body and athleticism to become a successful professional palyer but if they themselves don’t have an interest in football, then they will never be good at it. No matter how much you encourage or convince them to focus on that sport, they just won’t be good because their heart is not into it.
Same goes for Network Marketing Leadership.
They must WANT IT!
And how do you know if they want it or not?
Develop the Leadership Within YOU First
Before we talk about how you can tell your downlines want to be Leaders or not…
What happens if you don’t have any downlines?
Well if you don’t have any downlines in your organization yet, then the first leader you create is YOU.
Yes, I am talking about YOU!
So that’s why it is so important to commit to the 5 Core Daily Production Activities everyday because your actions will turbocharge your growth as a leader.
And the best part is that the more you grow as a leader, you will attract better and better future leaders into your organization. Your growth will also inspire your current downlines and make them want to be leaders.
So growing yourself is the first step towards creating Leaders so start making that commitment today.
How do you know if they want to be MLM Leaders?
Easy!
Just see who is willing to go through the commitment and learning pains.
And the BEST indicator to see if they WANT it is their commitment to the 5 Core Daily Production Activities.
3 Ways to Create Leaders in Your MLM Business
Once you know your downlines who WANT to be Leaders, here are 3 ways to Create Leaders.
1) Make them Commit to the 5 Core Daily Production Activities
If they do the 5 Core Daily Production Activities EVERYDAY, you will know a few things:
1) They will perform and sponsor because everyone who does the 5 Core Daily Production Activities is guaranteed to get results in 30 days or sooner. Their daily actions will speed their growth and give them results fast.
2) They are committed and have a long term vision.
Commitment Over Initial Performance
Note that I do NOT use “initial performance” as an indicator for Leadership. Just because someone signs up a lot of people in the first month does NOT make them a Leader.
On contrary, I have seen many quick performers drop off and don’t even come close to being Leaders because of their lack of commitment once challenges arise.
They fail to become Leaders not because of lack of skill but because the lack of Commitment.
So you can see how the 5 Core Daily Production Activities is a good Commitment Test.
On the contrary, I’ve seen slow initial performers become VERY GOOD leaders later on because they were committed from Day 1.
So that’s why Commitment is always a better indicator to Initial Performance.
Over the years, I’ve learned not to get too excited just because a new associate has initial success. That has no indication of whether that person will be the long term Leader that I will grow together with.
But if any new associate is fanatically committed to doing the 5 Core Daily Production Activities everyday even if it means sacrificing sleep, personal time, etc., then I get VERY EXCITED about his Leadership Potential.
2) Give Them Small Tasks To Do
To increase their Leadership, start giving them small gradual Leadership responsibilities.
Some examples is that they can introduce the speaker, be the MC, be responsibile for tech equipment setup, do part of a presentation or training, set up a social outing, etc.
IMPORTANT: Make sure it is a Small Step!
Note that I said to give them “small and gradual” not all of a sudden!
If they have NEVER spoken up in a group before, just having them introduce them speaker is a step up for them. Give them that role instead of having them do a part of the presentation.
Give them small steps to learn. Not 1 giant step to take.
If you give them TOO big a responsibility all of a sudden, it will hurt their Leadership growth because fear will set in and they get nervous All of a sudden, Leadership is not fun anymore. Or worse, they will perform distastrous and that experience will haunt them and discourage them from taking up responsibilities again
So make sure whatever role you give them, it is a small gradual step up from what they are currently doing.
3) Leadership Development Program
Get your Leaders to be part of a Leadership Development Program.
This is IN ADDITION to doing their own Self Development which is #4 of the 5 Core Daily Production Activities.
This Leadership Development Program can be as simple as reading one chapter of a Leadership book together and meeting once a week for an hour (or have a teleconference) to discuss what they learned or applied.
One of the things that I did a few years ago that was very effective was have my potential Leaders read 1 Chapter of John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership every week and then instead of meeting we simply posted what we learned and applied on a team blog that everyone read.
Other elements of a Leadership Development Program that you can implement are mini-events such as a 2 day Retreats or seminars.
Participation in Leadership Development Program
There are 2 ways you can have your team participate in these events.
One way is to invite everyone and let everyone participate.
Another way is by invite only and you make it more exclusive. I generally run my programs this way since it motivates the ones that are not invited to work hard on their business so that they can earn the right to be part of my exclusive Leadership group.
Everyone Wants to Be a Leader but Not Everyone is Willing
One thing to remember is… while everyone CAN BE SUCCESSFUL and CAN BE A LEADER…
sadly… not everyone makes the commitment.
For many, it is all talk and no action.
You will find many people that say they want to do it but they will give excuses.
If you do have a Leadership Development Program and allow everyone to participate you will discover that everyone wants to join but when it comes to doing the work and reading just ONE chapter of one of the best Leadership books ever written, many will come up with excuses.
And when that happens, it happens.
There is NO BS and NO HYPE about it.. Sadly, everyone wants to be succesful but few are willing to pay the price.
And that is why I say that a new associate’s fanatical commitment to the 5 Core Daily Production Activities gets me more excited than any initial success they have because Leadership is all about commitment.
Leadership is All About Commitment and Leading by Example.
How committed are you?
Are you the person that people want to join?
Remember, it doens’t matter how many downlines you have; wheter you have 50,000 or none…
The first Leader is ALWAYS YOU so always lead by example and commit to the 5 Core Daily Production Activities.
As you grow, not only will you attract better prospects but everyone around you will grow.
Now go create that Leadership Factory!
Sincerely,
Simon Chan
